This is the 13th release in the Parker’s Heritage Collection. There are a few unique aspects about this release. First, this is the first rye whiskey for the collection. Second, this rye was aged in level 5 charred, new American Oak barrels. The traditional PHC releases were aged in level 3 charred barrels. Finally, these barrels were stored on the 7th floor of the rick house for 8 years. The spirit was bottled at 105 proof.
(Tasted neat from a Glencairn Glass)
Color
Deep Copper
Nose
The nose is surprisingly sweet and spicy. Faint hints of barrel char are present. These notes are accompanied by vanilla and oak.
Palate
The first sip was somewhat thin, but it was accompanied by a burst of heat, spice, and a rich caramel flavor. The Second sip coats the entire mouth with an oily viscosity. Char and vanilla notes are most prominent. The third sip was a combination of dark fruit and barrel char.
Finish
The finish is long and complex. Initially, ethanol is present, however, this note is quickly replaced by smoke, toasted oak, and barrel char.
In conclusion
The Parker’s Heritage Collection has been a favorite in the bourbon community for some time. The 13th addition, and the first rye whiskey, to the collection upholds the heritage and tradition of quality Heaven Hill products. Bourbon drinkers who enjoy a complex nose, silky mouthfeel, and a long finish will appreciate this whiskey. This offering would make a fine addition to any bourbon drinker’s collection.
